The Oak Ridge National Lab Portable Diagnostics Package is being used to evaluate capabilities of a new class of magnetic mirror fusion reactor. The diagnostic is deployed on the Wisconsin High-temperature-superconducting Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM1.0, built at the University of Wisconsin-Madison), which is a prototype for the endcell of mirror-based fusion reactor. Evaluation of the scaling of the electron temperature in WHAM1.0 is a mission-critical task, which informs estimates of the cost and performance of both the power producing mirror and the nearer-term fusion volumetric neutron source.
