This INFUSE project seeks to demonstrate the viability of using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to quantify metallic and nonmetallic impurities in fluoride molten salts at the sensitivity required for service on ARC. Impurities in salt can significantly alter its chemistry resulting in operations impacts. Therefore, an accurate, real-time and in situ quantification methodology will support safe and successful operation of a fusion power plant using molten salt blankets. The project, led by ORNL, will leverage the laboratory expertise in real-time monitoring and the existing capabilities to measure Cr, Fe, O and H elements in FLiNaK. It will initially focus on utilizing single-pulse LIBS and subsequently explore double-pulse LIBS to achieve the desired sensitivity levels.
