Effective control of divertor conditions is critical for the success of current fusion experiments and future power plants, as these systems must handle extreme heat loads while efficiently removing helium ash produced by the burning plasma. This INFUSE proposal seeks to develop a cost-effective, and compact divertor and edge spectroscopy solution for Type One Energy’s next-step experiment, Infinity One. The proposed system will monitor line and continuum radiation in the 390–730nm wavelength range, enabling the use of windows and fibers, requiring minimal vessel openings and thus being well-suited for nuclear environments. The system will be tested and validated on the HSX stellarator, which provides a relevant temperature range and a variety of impurity charge states. Moreover, analysis tools and a database of line emissions will be developed to precisely determine impurity concentrations. By delivering a fully operational divertor and edge spectroscopy system from day one of Infinity One, this project aims to accelerate fusion development and improve control strategies for future power plants.
