The imaging of “hard” X-rays (energies of 10keV to 50keV) is a critical diagnostic for fusion research, yet it remains one of the most technically challenging diagnostic systems to deploy in a experimental testbed or reactor relevant environment. This INFUSE project aims to leverage the work performed at Sandia National Laboratories with GaAs to integrate a pixelated GaAs photodiode array onto an hCMOS Readout Integrated Circuit (ROIC). The resulting sensor would offer a compelling solution to the hard X-ray imaging challenges in fusion research by combining a GaAs photodiode array that provide superior stopping power and quantum efficiency for hard X-rays with radiation-tolerant, multi-frame, high-speed, and high-dynamic-range ROIC.
