Development of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Magnet Performance Prediction Workflows from a Novel Reel-to-Reel, In-field HTS Conductor Inspection Technique

September 10, 2025

In this project, Thea Energy, Inc. will collaborate with Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) to develop novel workflows for the advancement of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) based magnets for “Eos”, Thea Energy’s first integrated fusion system, using first of a kind reel-to-reel (R2R) inspection equipment. PPPL’s novel HTS inspection technology will allow Thea Energy to characterize the performance of its superconducting wire at low-temperature and in a high-background magnetic field in a continuous, reel-to-reel fashion, paving the way for high- fidelity magnet performance predictions with significantly reduced operational overhead. Thea Energy and PPPL will also collaborate to experimentally validate these magnet performance prediction workflows with a coil operating under background field.
